FAQ

Choosing an app category: FAQ

How do I choose the right App Store category?

Pick the category that best describes what your app actually does, then check what comparable apps chose. The App Store gives you a primary and a secondary category. The primary decides where you appear when people browse or filter, and whether you sit on the Apps tab or the Games tab. You set it in App Store Connect under App Information.

How many categories can an app have?

On the App Store, two: a primary and a secondary, plus up to two Games subcategories for games. On Google Play, one — there is no secondary category — but you can add up to five tags, which is where the extra nuance goes. A game’s secondary category is often Entertainment while its subcategory is Puzzle or Strategy, so this tool shows them separately.

Can I change my app category later?

Yes, on both stores. On the App Store you change it in App Store Connect under App Information. On Google Play you change it in Play Console under Grow users, Store presence, Store settings; Google says it can take up to 24 hours to show on your store listing.

Should I pick a less competitive category to rank more easily?

Only if the people you want actually browse there. A quieter category is easier to chart in, but a category is also a discovery surface: putting a fitness app under Lifestyle to avoid Health & Fitness hides it from the people looking for it. Both stores also treat deliberate miscategorisation as a review-guideline violation.

Does this tool tell me which category will rank best?

No, and nothing honestly can. It shows you where the apps each store lists as similar to a competitor have chosen to sit, so you can make the decision with the same information they had. Category is one input into store search and browse among many.

Is the app category picker free?

Yes. It is free, needs no signup and no card, and it reads only public store listing data. It is one of ASOScan’s free ASO tools.
